Cardiovascular Surgery Department

Background History

The department was established in 1964 as a Cardiac Surgical Department in Yangon General Hospital. The founder and first Cardiac Surgeon was Dr.KhinMaung Thaw. The team included Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr. Tin Maung and Sister Naw Aye Khin. The team started open heart Surgery in 1964 with the Australian Cardiac Surgical Team. Myanmar cardiac surgical team has been doing open heart surgery since 1966. From the late 1970s to 1980, vascular surgery was introduced first for abdominal aortic aneurysm and then for peripheral vascular diseases. The department was named the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and has been giving cardiac as well as vascular surgical services.

The department is also involved in teaching programme of University of Medicine 1, Yangon. The department is situated on the second floor of Cardiac Building in Yangon General Hospital. There are in-patients wards for 40 patients, cardiovascular surgical intensive care unit equipped with 4 ICU beds, high dependency unit for four patients, cardiovascular surgical operating theatre, conference room, lecture room, department library, and department office on the same floor.
