Biochemistry Department
Department of Biochemistry in the University of Medicine 1 was inaugurated as an autonomous department on 1st September, 1987. Previously, the teaching of Biochemistry was merged with that of Physiology and the professionals who taught Biochemistry to the Second Year M.B.B.S students were U Sein Gwan, Dr. U Sin Phone, Dr. U Nyunt Thwin, Dr. U Myint Thein, Dr. Daw Hnin Hline, Daw Thin Thin Hlaing Dr. Htay Htay, Dr. U Myo Win and Dr. Theingi Myint. Today, Department of Biochemistry functions with one professor, four associate professors, three lecturers, two assistant lecturers and thirteen demonstrators teaching Second Year M.B.B.S and postgraduate classes. Master of Medical Science (Biochemistry) was started from 1993 and till now 39 candidates have obtained their master degree. To upgrade the status of teaching of Biochemistry, Ph.D Course was introduced in 1998 and there were four candidates have obtained their PhD degree. Currently five candidates are attending the Ph.D (Biochemistry) course and three candidates are attending the MSc (Biochemistry) course. Faculty Members are also involved in the teaching programs for Master of Medical Science (in Pharmacology and Physiology) and Dental specialties every year. The department is located at the Pyay campus of the University of Medicine 1. It has a library with collection of books for biochemical teaching and research. The internet facility is available for the department and all the teachers, researchers and postgraduate students have access to it. The department has collaboration with the Department of Medical Research and National Health Laboratory for its research and postgraduate programs, and regularly participates in national conferences, symposia and seminars.
